Massively recently pointed out a small but very interesting part of an MMORPG.com interview involving “Fusionfall’s” community director, Richard Weil. Apparently the kid-friendly free-to-play MMORPG from Cartoon Network contains various “holes” in the virtual world that allow access to off-limit areas where developers test certain aspects of the title.
What do the little explorers do after entering these virtual world no man’s lands? According to the post, they take screenshots, post them on the forums, and then commence all sorts of bragging. Here’s a quote from Weil, describing the situation in greater detail.
“Boys at this age are just beginning to exhibit what essentially is a bragging behavior. In real life, it’s when they want you to watch while they do something cool. The ‘Look at ME!’ syndrome. They want to show off their mastery, but we do not have leader boards on the web to facilitate this. So that’s one thing to look forward to.”
But what are some consequences of this “mastery?” Weil said, “There’s always a possibility that their character falls down a hole so deep that we can’t retrieve them, or they suffer damage we can’t fix.”
Knowing this, will any of you retire your rift-seeking ways in the free MMORPG, or will your world spelunking continue?
